Just Big Dogs is a platform built exclusively for large and giant breed dog owners. We provide trusted resources, durable gear, emotional support letter services, and a growing network of big-dog-friendly professionals. Whether you’re raising a 60 lb lab or a 150 lb mastiff, everything we offer is designed to meet the unique needs of big dogs and the humans who love them.
We started Just Big Dogs because we believe big dogs deserve better—and so do their people. From unreliable gear that breaks to vague or shady ESA letter providers, we saw a gap and filled it. Our mission is to make it easy for large breed owners to find expert advice, gear that holds up, and mental health support that actually works. We’re here to serve the people raising the most loyal, loving dogs on the planet.
Just Big Dogs was born out of personal experience. Our founders went through one of life’s most difficult chapters—and it was their big dog who helped them get through it. That emotional bond sparked a realization: there weren’t enough trustworthy, specialized services out there for large breed dogs. So they created one. Just Big Dogs is more than a store or a service—it’s a community built by people who understand how powerful the bond with a big dog can be.
Our core values are compassion, integrity, and empowerment—for dogs and their humans. We believe in:
Designing gear that’s made to last, comfortable to wear, and built for big dog strength
Working only with licensed, ethical professionals to provide emotional support letters
Giving back to big dogs in need, through rescue support and donation programs
Helping large dog families thrive, not just survive
And most importantly, we believe in building tools that support big dog owners for the long haul. That’s why we created the Finder Pro directory, which helps you discover groomers, vets, trainers, walkers, and more who specialize in big dogs. Combined with our product guides, ESA resources, and blog content, the entire Just Big Dogs site is designed to be a one-stop hub for large breed pet parents—from adoption through every stage of life.
Just Big Dogs exists to be the ultimate resource for large and giant breed dog owners—providing expertly designed gear, trusted ESA letter services, and a community that understands the special bond between big dogs and their humans. Our goal is to make life with a big dog easier, safer, and more fulfilling.
Because big dogs have unique needs often overlooked by typical pet brands. From gear that can withstand their strength to emotional support services that respect their size and stature, we’re committed to building solutions specifically for the challenges and joys of large-breed parenthood.
Just Big Dogs was started by big dog owners who saw a huge gap in the market. After struggling to find quality gear and get a legitimate ESA letter during a hard time, we decided to build the platform we wish we had. Today, our small but mighty team is dedicated to helping big dog families thrive.
Emotional support Animal Letter FAQs
Find answers to commonly asked questions about our ESA and PSD Letters
An Emotional Support Animal (ESA) letter is a legal document written by a licensed mental health professional that states your animal provides emotional support that helps alleviate symptoms of a mental or emotional condition. It can help you qualify for housing rights under federal law—like avoiding pet fees or breed restrictions—without needing to pay a pet deposit.
Yes — when evaluations are performed and the letter is written by a licensed U.S. mental health professional qualified to do so. If so, your letter is legally valid under federal housing laws.Â
Yes. ESA-related evaluations may be completed through telehealth when they are conducted by a licensed mental health professional who is authorized to provide care in your state.
Just Big Dogs is a telehealth platform that helps refer individuals to licensed providers who have experience with emotional support animal-related housing needs. Through that provider relationship, you may be evaluated and receive care guidance. If your provider determines that an emotional support animal is clinically appropriate, they may issue ESA documentation for housing and accommodation purposes.
Anyone experiencing emotional or mental health challenges such as anxiety, depression, PTSD, or stress-related disorders may qualify. The first step is taking our free wellness assessment to help determine your eligibility.
We’ve simplified the process into three steps:
- Complete the wellness assessment and intake form
Start with a secure wellness assessment and intake form through our HIPAA-compliant platform. This helps your provider better understand your needs and helps us connect you with the appropriate provider pathway.
- Begin care with a licensed professional
Once your intake is complete, you are referred to a licensed mental health professional in your state who can begin a therapeutic provider relationship with you. Your provider reviews your responses, evaluates your situation, and determines whether emotional support animal documentation may be clinically appropriate.
- Receive documentation if approved
If approved, your provider will issue ESA documentation so you can begin your housing accommodation request. Many applications are reviewed within 24 hours, and same-day review may be available depending on provider availability and state requirements.
Some states require a 30-day provider-patient relationship before ESA documentation can be issued.Â
A PSD (Psychiatric Service Dog) Letter is a legal document from a licensed mental health professional confirming that your dog is trained (or in training) to help with a mental health disability. PSDs have broader rights than ESAs, including public access under the ADA.
An ESA letter gives your pet housing protections under the Fair Housing Act, but no public access rights. A PSD letter grants housing rights and public access rights, allowing you to take your dog into most public places, stores, and transportation, provided they are trained to perform tasks for your disability.
Yes. PSDs must be trained to perform specific tasks that help you manage your mental health condition — for example, interrupting panic attacks or reminding you to take medication. The training can be self-directed or professional.
You must have a diagnosed mental health condition recognized under the ADA, such as PTSD, severe anxiety, or depression, and your dog must be trained or in training to assist with that condition.
Five states — California, Iowa, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Montana — require a 30-day provider-patient relationship before a licensed professional can issue an ESA letter. This means your provider must have an ongoing relationship with you for at least 30 days before completing and signing your ESA documentation.
If you’re in one of these states and need faster assistance, you may qualify for a Psychiatric Service Dog (PSD) letter if you have a dog that is trained, or currently in training, to assist with a mental health condition. PSD letters are not subject to the 30-day wait and may be issued the same day once your evaluation is complete.
Yes. Some states require a 30-day relationship with your provider before an ESA letter can be issued. PSD letters often do not have the same waiting requirement, making them a faster alternative for eligible clients.
Five states — California, Iowa, Louisiana, Arkansas and Montana — require a 30-day provider-patient relationship before an ESA letter can be issued. In these states, Same-Day Delivery does not bypass the 30-day requirement. However, upgrading to Same-Day Delivery will prioritize your application for immediate review and processing once the 30 days have passed.
If you have a dog that is trained or currently in training to assist with a mental health condition, you may qualify for a Psychiatric Service Dog (PSD) letter instead. PSD letters are not subject to the 30-day wait in these states and may be issued the same day once your provider has completed the evaluation.
For housing-related ESA accommodation requests, an emotional support animal does not need to be trained to perform specific tasks like a service dog.
An ESA provides emotional support through companionship and the human-animal bond. ESA documentation focuses on whether your animal supports a disability-related emotional need as part of your housing accommodation request. That determination is made by your licensed mental health professional based on your individual circumstances.
If your dog is trained to perform specific tasks related to a psychiatric disability, that may fall under a different category: a Psychiatric Service Dog. Psychiatric Service Dogs are different from ESAs because they are trained to perform disability-related tasks and may have different access rights and documentation needs.
If you are unsure which path fits your situation, contact our Care Team and they can help guide you toward the appropriate provider pathway.
Our free ESA assessment is designed to help determine if you may qualify for an emotional support animal. It’s the first step in the process and mirrors many of the indicators that our providers use during evaluation. There’s no obligation and no payment required to take it.Â
Once you complete the assessment:
- You’ll receive your Emotional Wellness result.
- You’ll have the option to continue with licensed provider care.
- If you move forward, you’ll be connected with a licensed mental health professional in your state.
- Your provider will review your responses, evaluate your needs, and determine whether an emotional support animal is clinically appropriate.
- If approved, your provider may issue ESA documentation for housing accommodation purposes.
You are always in control — and if you are not approved, you are protected by our money-back guarantee.
If your provider determines that an ESA letter isn’t the right fit, you won’t be charged. Every evaluation is risk-free — no approvals, no payment.
That’s completely normal — many people aren’t sure at first. That’s why we created a free emotional wellness assessment. It helps identify whether you may benefit from an emotional support animal based on your current symptoms and situation. You’ll get instant feedback, including a personal result and guidance on next steps. It’s quick, pressure-free, and designed to help you make an informed decision.
Just Big Dogs is a HIPAA-compliant telehealth platform built around responsible ESA support, licensed provider care, and housing-focused guidance.
Instead of treating the process as a quick form or automatic letter, we help refer you to a licensed mental health professional in your state who has experience with emotional support animal-related needs. Through that provider relationship, your provider can review your intake, evaluate your individual situation, and determine whether ESA documentation may be clinically appropriate.
What makes Just Big Dogs different:
- HIPAA-compliant telehealth platform
- Licensed mental health professionals in your state
- Providers familiar with ESA-related housing needs
- A path to begin a therapeutic provider relationship
- Evaluation-first process, not automatic approval
- Opportunity for ongoing care with your provider, as appropriate
- Post-letter support resources through our Good Neighbor Housing Support approach
- Care team support to help guide you throughout the process
We built Just Big Dogs for people who want to approach ESA support the right way — with licensed care, clear guidance, and support beyond the letter.
Yes. While we’re called JustBigDogs because we love big breeds, your ESA letter can apply to any animal that provides emotional support. That includes dogs (big and small), cats, rabbits, birds, and even less common pets. As long as the animal helps support your emotional wellness and is reasonable for your living situation, it may qualify. If you’re unsure, just start the evaluation — your provider will guide you.
Yes, ESA letters are typically valid for 12 months. We’ll send you renewal reminders before your letter expires, and we offer renewal discounts to make it easy to stay covered.
ESA documentation is primarily used for housing accommodation requests. Under fair housing rules, housing providers may need to consider reasonable accommodation requests for assistance animals when the request is connected to a disability-related need.
That said, no company can guarantee that every housing provider will immediately accept documentation without questions. Housing providers may review requests, ask for appropriate information when allowed, and follow their own accommodation process.
If your ESA documentation is issued, Just Big Dogs also provides post-letter support resources to help you understand how to submit your request, communicate professionally, and respond if your housing provider asks for additional information.
ESA documentation is generally intended for housing accommodation requests, not guaranteed travel access.
Many airlines and travel providers treat emotional support animals as pets rather than service animals. This means they may have their own policies, forms, pet fees, carrier requirements, or restrictions. You should always contact your airline, hotel, transportation provider, or travel accommodation provider directly before traveling with an ESA.
If your dog is trained to perform specific tasks related to a psychiatric disability, that may fall under a different category: a Psychiatric Service Dog. Psychiatric Service Dogs are different from ESAs and may have different access rights and documentation needs.
Yes. Under the Fair Housing Act, landlords must accept emotional support animals with a valid letter from a licensed mental health professional. They cannot charge pet fees or deny housing due to breed or size.
Yes. With a valid ESA letter, landlords must typically waive pet-related fees and cannot enforce breed or size restrictions, as long as the animal doesn’t pose a direct threat or cause substantial damage.
An ESA supports emotional and mental health but doesn’t require specialized training. A service animal, on the other hand, is trained to perform specific tasks for someone with a disability (such as guiding the visually impaired). ESA rights apply to housing, while service animal rights apply to both housing and public places.
Most applications are reviewed within 24 hours, depending on provider availability and state requirements.
Same-day review may be available for eligible orders submitted before the daily cut-off time, but same-day approval is not guaranteed. You must still begin care with a licensed provider, complete the provider review process, and receive a clinical determination.
In states that require a 30-day provider-patient relationship before ESA documentation can be issued, same-day delivery does not shorten the required waiting period.

If approved, your digital ESA documentation is typically delivered shortly after your licensed provider completes the review and issues the letter.
Printed materials, if ordered, ship through the U.S. Postal Service and typically arrive within 3–7 business days after processing.
Yes, in some cases. If you have more than one pet that provides therapeutic benefits, your provider may include both in your ESA letter—depending on your circumstances and their professional judgment.
A service animal is trained to perform specific tasks for a person with a disability and is protected under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Emotional support animals are not task-trained but offer emotional and mental health benefits. ESA letters fall under housing protection — not public access.
Yes. We accept HSA (Health Savings Account) and FSA (Flexible Spending Account) cards for your telehealth mental-health evaluation. Just enter your benefits card at checkout like a normal debit or credit card.
Because our evaluations are performed by licensed clinicians, they qualify as eligible medical expenses. That means you can use your HSA or FSA card with confidence, just like you would at a doctor’s office or pharmacy.
Unfortunately, Medicare and Medicaid do not cover emotional support animal evaluations or letters. You are welcome to pay with a regular credit/debit card or with an HSA/FSA benefits card if you have one.
No. Just Big Dogs is not the medical provider and does not directly issue ESA documentation.
Just Big Dogs is a telehealth platform that helps connect individuals with licensed mental health professionals in their state. Your ESA documentation, if approved, is issued by your licensed provider after establishing care. Just Big Dogs supports the process by providing the platform, care team assistance, secure HIPPA technology, provider coordination, and post-letter housing support resources.
Our system includes an AI writing assistant to help clients answer questions more easily. It provides a suggested draft that you can review and edit before sending to your clinician. This helps save time while keeping every response completely under your control.
